Tanja Nisonen

French horn

Tanja Nisonen is a French horn artist with many different roles. She is part of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, teaches French horn at the Turku UAS Arts Academy and is a postgraduate at Uniarts Sibelius Academy within the subject of women composing for French horn. To Nisonen it is important to promote, develop and widen the knowledge of horn playing. Together with the French horn quartet 4th Line she has recorded previously unheard music from Nordic composers. Following that she has also recorded a solo album with works for French horn by female composers of the early 20th century. For several years she has also been the chairperson of the board for the Finnish French Horn Club. The club arranged the Nordic Horn Seminar in 2023, for which Nisonen was the artistic director.

Nisonen has been active in creating her own artistic career by performing both as a chamber musician and as a soloist, together with Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and the City Orchestras in Jyväskylä, Lappeenranta and Joensuu, among others. Her love of chamber music led her to founding her own chamber music association, Artsoppa ry, in 2008.

Nisonen har performed at Finnish chamber music festivals, as well as in Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, Germany, Spand and Norway. In the summer of 2024 she is the artistic actualizatior of the Kokonainen Festival.

Since 2010 Nisonen has been French horn teacher at Turku Conservatory and at Turku UAS Arts Academy. She has hosted master classes at different French horn events in her home country and abroad. She also teaches at the Brass Academy.

A sign of the international interest in her are the invitations to the International Horn Society seminars in Gent in Belgium 2019 and in Montreal in Canada 2023. She has been the visiting principal French horn in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and in the Las Palmas and Santa Cruz orchestras.
